Here is some of my ideas and thoughts to create a working lightsaber.

Alot that I've read about is trying to literally use light to make a coherent blade.

My thoughts differ in respect that I'm planning to use energy instead of light to make the blade.

The description from StarWars.com states that they use energy to form the blade. Heres an excerpt from the site.
Those who believe the Jedi order began on the ancient world of Ossus point to the abundance of Adegan crystals in the system as proof. These crystals are ideal for the creation of lightsabers, as they focus the energy released from a saber's power cell into the tight, blade-like beam. Early lightsabers did not have self-contained power cells, and were instead connected by a conducting cable to a belt-worn power pack.

Once unleashed, the power channels through a positively charged continuous energy lens at the center of the handle. The beam then arcs circumferentially back to a negatively charged high energy flux aperture. A superconductor transfers the power from the flux aperture to the power cell. As a result, a lightsaber only expends power when its blade cuts through something. So efficient is the blade, that it does not radiate heat unless it comes into contact with something.

With my current understandings of things I cant say that we could not expend energy having the blade formed but think it could be possible through using high powered equipment to form a fixed length for the blade. I am thinking through using an electron gun or charged particle accelerator that it could be possible to make a beam of coherent energy and focus it through a magnetic field and use the opposite polarity at the base to do double duty so to speak to first help at as a mover for the electrons or particles to be accelerated, and pushed through the magnetic lens then to make the beam incoherent to a point that after its kinetic force is neutralized it will become attracted back toward the opposite polarity and will try to return to its source. In such a way it should act as described, and if the charges were standard like negatively charged blade or positively charged blade should try to repel each other. In so doing, then sparring and dueling should be possible, but if there was mixed charged blades they may try to stick together or pass straight through. In any case there should be a standard among manufacturers so as there is defensive qualities to the blades as well.
